Belly dance

Belly dance is the western name of the traditional Oriental dance- Raqs Sharqi (translated literally in Arabic - an Oriental dance). This name has been widened and today it is used as a name of all traditional Middle Eastern dances.

The homeland of the Oriental dance is Egypt. The real name is Raqs sharki - "raqs" -  dance, "sharki" - Middle Eastern and all other folk and typical styles have their names.

It unites elements from Indian, Persian, Andalusian and Arabic dances. Raqs baladi and Raqs sharki are two basic forms of the dance known in the Middle East. In the Western world, it is known as belly dance or simply an Oriental dance though more movements with body, hands and feet are performed in the Oriental dance and not only with the abdomen part as it is perceived. The dance is directed to woman and the only purpose is to seduce her.
